About this piece

Our Land, Water and Air Relations

Created for Wildlife Conservation Society Canada, this piece illustrates how animals, lands, waters, skies, and people are all interconnected.

Moving through the four seasons and landscapes across Turtle Island, the piece begins in spring on the West Coast/Pacific Northwest with the grizzly bear, representing the Bear Clan - healers, protectors, medicine carriers, and leaders.

Summer moves into the vast Prairies, where the turtle represents Turtle Island and the Turtle Clan, symbolizing our direct relationship with Mother Earth and our shared responsibility to care for the land and all of Creation. The leafcutter bee represents honesty and a willingness to serve the community above all. Above them, the sundog symbolizes hope, healing, unity, and connection to the Great Spirit.

Fall brings us to Northern Ontario and the moose, representing respect, gratitude, reciprocity, and sustainability. Our relationship with the moose reminds us to honour what the animal provides; traditionally, all parts are used for food, clothing, tools, and ceremonial items. The moose also teaches us to embrace our individuality and stand proudly in who we are.

Finally, winter brings us to the Arctic, where the ringed seal represents adaptability, intuition, resilience, and the interconnectedness of all life within Arctic ecosystems. Above, the Northern Lights honour the presence and guidance of our Ancestors. Four circles surrounding the piece represent the Four Directions. 

Together, these representations speak to our roles within nature and in life, while reflecting our shared responsibility to care for nature for the next seven generations. Each clan and animal also carries its own teachings within each Indigenous community. This piece serves as both a visual teaching and a reminder of the wisdom animals carry, the lessons they offer if we listen, and their crucial roles within the ecosystems and communities across Turtle Island.
