About This Piece
Ribbon Skirt
Due to colonization, and my grandfather attending residential school, it was difficult for me to reconnect to my culture. When I got my first ribbon skirt, it was gifted to me for my birthday from my home community Swan Lake First Nation. It was handmade by my relative on my grandmother's side in Turtle Mountains reservation. This skirt and matching bag made me so happy, and through a family effort, made it even more meaningful. It gave me a sense of identity, community, and a deeper appreciation for Indigenous artists. Since then, I have gotten several more ribbon skirts from Indigenous artists and decided to kickstart my own art career. I plan on learning to sew this year and making my own ribbon skirts soon. This skirt reminds me that every step our people take to reconnect is progress, no matter how small.
Thank you so much, Chi Miigwetch from the bottom of my heart for supporting my small Indigenous-owned business.
