About This Piece

The Braid Of Life

The Braid of Life is symbolic of many parts of my identity and culture. In this work, you see a braid, the medicine wheel, and a line joining everything together. This is meant to show the ways in which we are all interconnected, combined by our body, mind, heart, and spirit. There is no beginning or end, we are all on this journey of life together. The braid represents one of our sacred medicines, sweetgrass, and is also symbolic of our hair which is sacred to us. As an Indigenous woman, I've been taught to grow my hair long, to only think positive intentions when braiding it, and to where your braid with pride. The braid to me personally, also represents protection, resilience, beauty, and healing. The overall theme for this piece is healing and reconnection. As an Indigenous woman who grew up off-reserve, I've been on a journey of reconnection my entire life. However, at the age of 23, I feel as though now that I am learning the traditions, and the language, and building a connection with my community I am truly walking what we call the "Red Road". Whether you are Indigenous or not, if you are on a healing journey, and a journey to finding yourself, reconnecting your roots and heritage, and embracing your identity - this art is for you.
